“
I was asked to feature a gym in Morpeth last November. When
the owner, Shaun, rang me and suggested I went for a visit
and to be “put through my paces” I was less than
enthusiastic. Whilst I was impressed with his sales pitch,
sporting activity is not my thing so I wasn’t exactly
looking forward to it. However with a post Christmas indulgence
hangover and a newsletter to compile, I made the call. Bodymechanix
is on Coopies Lane Industrial Estate, which feels like an
odd place for a gym, but once inside the facilities are excellent.
As I shuffled around in a gym kit, previously known only to
my sofa, I was surprised at the scale of his set up. There
are two fully equipped gyms – one is for personal training
only, and has a boxing ring. The other has a swipe card entrance
and members can let themselves in and use the facilities to
suit themselves. Both gyms have satellite TV and there is
also a studio space where a range of classes including pole
dancing and belly dancing are held.
So the training session… When Shaun
said he hoped I’d enjoy it, I thought, “fat chance”,
but there is something about a one to one session with a qualified
instructor that makes you focus and get on with it, and it
wasn’t as unpleasant as I’d thought. I particularly
enjoyed the boxing training and I was pleased to learn I had
a decent punch…
Shaun offers a flexible way of getting or
keeping fit. There is gym membership, at reasonable rates,
fitness classes, boxing and self defence training - and the
personal training which is tailored to an individual’s
needs. It is at this point that I admit I have continued with
my sessions. I still look at the clock, but I’m seeing
the results and if Shaun can coax a performance out of a confirmed
sofa surfer like me, there’s hope for everyone else…”
